For the past several months, I have been tutoring HS Students through Chatham County Together (provide link).
This has been quite rewarding, and I hope to share some of this experience some day.

Constructing a Cardboard Castle with PaperHand Puppet Intervention
A few weeks ago I had the honor of being approached by Donovan Zimmerman, Director of PaperHand Puppet Intervention (and a friend), to help him construct a giant castle using his favorite material cardboard. This endeavor was being commissioned by Burt's Bees, for the Earth Day celebration that they hold every Spring in downtown Raleigh, near the Museum of Natural History.
I had helped to paint some sets for PaperHand the last two summers, and Donovan and then-Co-Director Jan Burger gave Tyrius the Tire Worm his first break break, back in 2008.

It was quite an experience, which I have to share some of soon.
I also have alot of great photos of the process of this creation being both built and enjoyed, which I also hope to share soon.
Of course, the first step to construction a cardboard castle, is to make some bricks....

Working on Project with Alexander
A young friend of mine, Alexander, recently got himself kicked out of school. I won't go into his business, but he did an honorable thing, but perhaps without thought for consequences (in the heat of the situation), and he is now suffering those consequences, of being out of school with little to do.
So, as Alexander is a bud (he has helped me alot at Reptire Designs, most notable on the creation of Tyrius the Tire Worm), I thought I would see if I could suggest some ways to Alexander to keep himself occupied. After all, there is plenty to be done, especially for someone with as much artistic talent as Alex has, this cannot be squandered!
As a mostly self-employed artist, I know well that a day all to your self can be a huge and scary thing when you are not prepared for that responsibilty. But, conversely, with a little guidance, inspiration and direction a day of your own can be golden.
I hope I can help Alexander put this time to good use.

Sense, and Ostensibility
Lately a word has been rolling/ jogging about in me head. I would dare to say it is my new favorite word.
That word is "ostensibly".
I think that I would like to introduce this word to the next group of students I get to work with.
Why? Because I think its a good one to know.
There is alot about life in that little word.
First I would explain that its not to be confused with 'ostentatious', another good word, but with a very different meaning.
Then I would try to define 'ostensibility' for them.
Basicly, I would explain, it translates as: if all goes as planned.
Why is this important? Because, in life, things don't really go as planned very much (in fact its pretty safe to say that they rarely do!). BUT....All The Same,
we can't give up hope, cause that's no fun, and THEREFOR, we MUST Proceed, ACCOUNTING for the fact that things might not turn out the way that we are planning for them to, and who knows, they just might.
Quite a shoulder-load for one little word right? I might venture to say my entire philosophy of life at the moment is pretty well summed up in it.
I think that I might just have to get this mighty word tattooed across my chest..or maybe my forehead.

The inspiration for this blog
Here is Tracey Broome's blog spot address. You ought to check it out. I have never met her in person, but I have corresponded with her briefly, and she is a hecka rad person.
I think if you are interested in art education,at all, or pottery,or even if not, you will get alot out of her blog, because she strikes me as a very authentic person, who happens to also be funny as hell.

No canoe for you
Well the 2 kids didn't show up at the Library today for whatever reason. Maybe they couldn't find the library, maybe their mom wouldn't let them go, maybe they woke up this morning and found that they were over rafts. Oh well. Such is working with youth and random strangers. Not wise to pin high hopes on either, not really even fair, yet we adults are often tempted to. I wonder why...
Thats OK, I don't live in Sanford, and was not looking to start a canoe making club, at least not in Sanford. Maybe I'll start one in Siler City though...
